The Cost of Running an Empire

Worth Quoting: The Cost of Running an Empire

"In America, we know what we have to do. We have an empire to run. Outlying places to police. People to boss around. Sabres to rattle. And an economy that has to remain Numero Uno. Unfortunately, history shows that running an empire is a disastrously expensive business. You pay in cash. You pay in blood. And you pay with your own soul."

Your Papers Please...

One morning in Sept. 2005, Deb was riding the public bus to work. She was minding her own business, reading a book and planning for work, when a security guard got on this public bus and demanded that every passenger show their ID. Deb, having done nothing wrong, declined. The guard called in federal cops, and she was arrested and charged with federal criminal misdemeanors after refusing to show ID on demand. She hasn't commuted by public bus since. For more information, see LINK: http://www.papersplease.org/davis/

Tis the Season...

November 16, 2005. If you're thinking I'm referring to the Holiday Season, you're wrong. I'm referring to the “Tax Season.”

That's right. On or about the 1st of November, every year, the people who make their living from taxes come out of the woodwork: accountants, attorneys, and tax prepares. They start sending the message. Some by mail, some by radio, some by Internet, and some by television. The message is always the same. You've got to pay the “man” so why not let us help you reduce the amount.

Then, of course, we have the Dynamic Duo - the IRS and “Justice” Department - gearing up their propaganda mill of intimidation.

You know the drill, file law suits and indictments against “tax protesters” and famous people for the sake of publicity and the fear factor. What you don't hear is when these law suits and indictments are dismissed or dropped for lack of proof. That doesn't help with the intimidation or “fear factor.”

Which raises several questions.

Why do the IRS and “Justice” Department get together every year and do this? If they have the legal privilege to levy a tax and collect it, why the charade? Why the grandstanding at this time of year?

Just as importantly, why do they go after the people they disparagingly call “tax protesters?” After all, these people are just exercising their right of free speech. They are telling people through the written and spoken word what they think is right, or wrong. They are giving their opinion.

Which gets us to the most important question of all. What part of the word “no” don't these people who call themselves “Government” understand?

Women's rights activists and prosecutors tell us men that when we are making sexual advances towards a woman (I guess this would apply to another man also, but I really don't know), that when we hear the word “no” we are to stop immediately. If we don't, we are subject to prosecution. This is as it should be.

Webster's New World Dictionary Second College Edition defines the word “no” as: “1. not ever, 2. not in any degree; not at all.”

So, when we read the First Amendment to the Constitution for the United States of America we find: “Congress shall make NO law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

You will notice that there are no limits on the “freedom of speech.” It doesn't say, “unless the Government doesn't like what you say;” or, “unless what you say is absolutely correct,” or, “unless it pertains to taxes.” It just says: “NO.”

So, what is it that these people that call themselves “Government” trying so hard to hide? What is it that they don't want you to know? What is it that is so damning that they willingly and knowingly violate their charter, ignore the rights of the people, and are willing to throw people in jail to hide?

I'm not sure I know the complete answer to this question. But, I do know part of the answer. I have known it for some time. I had my answer confirmed in an interesting little book I bought in 1999 called IRS: Liars, Thieves, Thugs, Cowards, and Hypocrites. The author/publisher passed away in 2003 and the book became unavailable. Thanks to the Internet, the book is now available in digital format. Do yourself a favor and get a copy. You won't regret it.
